The History of Chapel Hill
Chapel Hill was incorporated in 1819. The town and the university have always been entwined. The town was originally created to serve the university, that had already been established at the end of the 18th century. The original map of the town shows 30 parcels of land wrapping around the fringes of the campus. In the center of the town was a Church of England house of worship on a hill. The hill is still there; the chapel is not, but the name remains: Chapel Hill.
Visitors and residents can learn much about Chapel Hill by visiting the Chapel Hill Museum
and by visiting the museum website.
